It is probably not news to you
that America is overweight.
But did you know that an obese child who grows to an obese adult could face a multitude of health risks, including high blood pressure, heart disease, some types of cancer, even psychological disorders?
The number of overweight children in Boone County is alarming. Nearly one fourth of children who entered kindergarten in Boone County last year were overweight or at risk for being overweight. The reason is simple ... just like adults, children are not getting enough physical activity or proper nutrition.
The Department of Health and Human Services makes these suggestions for preventing or reducing childhood obesity:
• Be physically active. It is recommended that children accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. Even greater amounts of physical activity may be necessary for the prevention of weight gain, for weight loss, or for sustaining weight loss.
• Plan family activities that provide everyone with exercise and enjoyment.
• Limit TV and video game time to fewer than two hours a day.
When it comes to physical activity, Boone County Parks and Recreation are the experts!
The Boone County Parks have great playgrounds for children of all ages. There are baby swings, swings, things to climb on, slide on, walk on and crawl through. Feeling a bit more adventurous? Take a walk, a bike or a stroller on the paved trails throughout many of the parks.
